Northeastern Minnesota’s Gichigami Express Sled Dog Race Guarantees $25,000 Purse
Grand Portage, MN - Northeastern Minnesota’s premiere stage dogsled race is alive and well with a guaranteed $25,000 race purse. The Gichigami Express stage race is all set to take place January 4-6, 2014.
“We have many mushers competing in the Gichigami Express in training for the season.”, Says Jack Stone, Board President. “We invite volunteers and spectators to come out and enjoy the outdoors and sled dog racing the weekend of January 4-6.”
The Gichigami Express is a three day stage race starting in Grand Portage on Saturday, January 4th at 9am and traveling approximately 60 miles to Hungry Jack Lake. The second day stage race will run from the Gunflint Trail to Devil Track Lake near Grand Marais. The third and last day of the race, the teams will return to Grand Portage.
This is a prime spectator sport as well as a premiere race. Each night, starting on Friday night in Grand Portage, there will be a dinner where spectators can join the mushers for a good meal and listen to stories of their experiences. Saturday night’s dinner will be held at the Gunflint Lodge, Gunflint Trail, Sunday night’s dinner will be held at the American Legion in Grand Marais and the Monday night awards dinner will be at the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino. Each morning there will be a breakfast before the race starts. The final locations are to be confirmed.

Prior to the race there will be an online auction with items donated by various sponsors including overnight stays at local resorts and lodges, framed photographs, gift certificates at Cook County restaurants and more. Please check the web site for more details.
